Active Speaking Training vs. Passive Recognition

Traditional language learning platforms focus heavily on multiple-choice cards and matching exercises. While this is comfortable, it builds passive recognition. In a real conversational context in Spain, there are no bubbles to tap or word banks to select from. You must construct the Spanish response from scratch. This is active recall.

Spanish Unstuck is designed to bridge this exact gap. By presenting situational prompts in English and asking you to recall and speak the corresponding Spain Spanish out loud, we practise the active retrieval skills you need to speak Spanish in real-world situations.

Why I built Spanish Unstuck

I had been learning Spanish for around 18 months to two years. My comprehension was decent and I had built up plenty of vocabulary, but I felt stuck. I understood that I needed to speak more — and that to speak, I needed to be able to recall the Spanish myself.

I had tried other apps, but what I found was usually single-word flashcards or full lessons. What I wanted was simpler: give me a sentence in English, make me try to recall the Spanish, then let me check how I did.

I was not trying to give speeches in Spanish. I wanted to chat to my Spanish friend in the pub on a Friday night without feeling like I was making a fool of myself. Spanish Unstuck grew out of that very ordinary frustration.

I am still learning Spanish myself. Spanish Unstuck is not meant to replace lessons, tutors or other apps; it focuses on the gap between recognising Spanish and being able to retrieve and say it when you need it.

Spaced Repetition & Spoken Recall

Effortful retrieval and spaced review can strengthen memory. Spanish Unstuck uses a simple review system based on your self-rated recall (Easy, Nearly, Hard, Forgot), so phrases you struggle with are prioritised to reappear sooner:

  • 🔴 Forgot: Loops back almost immediately inside the active practice deck.
  • 🟠 Hard: Prioritized to review again in your next immediate sessions.
  • 🟡 Nearly: Reinforced moderately to solidify connections.
  • 🟢 Recalled: Mastered! Pushed far back into your long-term review queue.

Levels & Progression

Our active library includes more than 400 speaking-recall prompts organised into A1, A2 and B1 difficulty bands. CEFR is used as a broad guide to progression rather than as a formal certification or one-to-one mapping:

  • 🟢 A1 (Survival Essentials): Core cafe ordering, navigation, greetings, buying clothes, and asking for help.
  • 🟡 A2 (Everyday Conversations): Hobbies, plans, talking about past activities, and standard socializing.
  • 🔵 B1 (Intermediate Speaking): Explaining, recovering, giving reasons, handling less-routine problems, and keeping conversations moving.

Free and Pro access: Free accounts can practise 40 selected A1 recall prompts plus 6 starter Situations. Lifetime Pro unlocks the full current recall library and Situations across A1, A2 and B1 for a one-off payment of £12.99 (Founder launch price), with no subscription or recurring billing.
